CHAPTER TWENTY-SEVEN

Gunny Jennings finished outfitting her armor, replacing her knives, grenades, and extra ammo. Owens had returned a minute earlier. Other than his sprained wrist, Bravo-Two-Five was ready.

“What about them?” Naki asked, nodding at the Javier and the men they had subdued.

“Leave ’em. The rest will come back soon. We have a place to be.”

Naki gave her a raised eyebrow but complied. He climbed into the Corsair as the engines powered up. Plasma burned from the exhaust, blackening the soil underneath as the dropship lifted off. The trees in a fifty-meter radius shook and swayed from the blast. A few seconds later and the Corsair skirted the tree line heading north.

“What’s the plan?” Boudreaux asked over the comms. It was far too loud inside to have a normal conversation.

“What’s their SAM capabilities?” Jennings asked as she made her way to the cockpit. Owens manned the EW suite with one hand. June acted as his backup since she was the most trained on the equipment besides Owens.

“Uh,” Boudreaux said, hesitating. “I guess we’ll find out.”

“Whatever it is, Gunny, they got nothing on our EW,” Owens added.

Jennings left it to him, then. She understood SUT, and she knew the importance of EW, but operating the actual equipment wasn’t her skill set. She had a decision to make. Attempt a rescue of her CO, head for orbit, or…

Dammit. While she had every ounce of confidence in her four Marines, they couldn’t take an army. Not without their Raptor suits. If they broke for orbit, no matter how good their EW was, they were still in a dropship. It was no match for a warship, regardless of tech level.

They couldn’t run. They couldn’t hide.

The image of those three little girls popped into her head. Dark haired and messy, running around trying to outflank her. She wasn’t exactly the most personable human being to grace the universe. But those little girls…

No one wants to shoot a bunch of little girls… Javiers voice came back to her. He sounded so sure of himself. Jennings wasn’t what one would call educated. She’d read a few books, knew the history of the Marine Corps. But she knew, without a doubt, it was rare for coups not to turn bloody, especially when they weren’t over quickly. Maybe they had the best of intentions. She doubted that, but whatever ideas they started with would fall by the wayside as power came within their grasp.

“Ah damn. The captain’s going to be pissed,” she whispered. “Boudreaux, set a course for the presidential palace.”

“Say again, Gunny?”

“You heard me. Marines, we’re going on a rescue op.”
